Harley CEO Keith Wandell pays debt of gratitude to board member Barry Allen

Keith Wandell, top executive at Harley-Davidson Inc., took a few minutes at the company?s annual shareholders meeting Saturday to offer some praise for Barry Allen, a long-time member of the company?s board of directors.

Allen, 63, has served as a director for the Milwaukee-based heavyweight motorcycle manufacturer since 1992.

?Over the ensuing 20 years, he?s had a profound influence on the direction and the success of the company,? Wandell told a crowd of a shareholders who gathered at the Harley-Davidson Museum?

Allen was among 12 candidates approved by shareholders on Saturday to serve on the board.

?He?s not going to go anywhere any time soon,? Wandell said.

However, he told shareholders that he felt it was important at this point to recognize Allen for his service to the company and especially acknowledge his accomplishments as chairman of the board from 2009 until February, when Wandell added the chairman?s title to his duties.

?It was a time of turmoil in the economy and transformation within our company,? Wandell said. ?Barry?s extensive business experience, including his expertise in international business and operations, and his deep understanding of our company and our industry have been invaluable.?

Allen?s appointment as board chairman in 2009 coincided with Wandell taking over as CEO at Harley-Davidson after a 21-year career at Glendale-based Johnson Controls.

?I could not have had a better mentor, an advisor and now a friend,? Wandell said. ?We spent countless hours exploring the issues and opportunities and he always made time for Harley-Davidson and for me, regardless of his other responsibilities, of which he has many.?
