Speech Writing for Kids: Less is more | Public Speaking for Kids

Posted on by nafees ?

There is a proverb in the world of public speaking that says if you squeeze too much information in, you squeeze your audience out. In order to be an effective public speaker, your child will have to learn how to convince an audience in the shortest time possible, with lucid arguments. In order to do this, your child must understand the meaning of the platitude less is more.

Less being more is not an excuse for your child to to do some haphazard research and put together a speech that can be delivered in sixty seconds. It will actually require your child to climb a mountain of research so they know all the major arguments and counter-arguments for their chosen subject. They can then condense the most relevant and effective into their speech. They will then have to dilute the content further and make sure the arguments are being delivered in the simplest manner.

Here are some tips on how to make content lucid and effective:

1.Choose relevant examples: Your child should think about the audience they will be speaking to. If it is their classmates then the examples they can relate to will be different than if they are speaking to a room full of adults. Make sure the examples they use to prove a point are within the frame of reference of the audience demography.

2. Use analogies wisely: Do not overstretch them to make a point.

3. Ask rhetorical questions:?Asking, ?what would you do in such a situation?? is less verbose than saying, ?in such a situation I bet you would do x and y?. It also engages an audience and invites them to think for themselves. People love solving problems or reaching conclusion by themselves; it empowers them. If your child can empower his or her audience, he or she is on the path to public speaking success.
