Vegas Cheap Eats. Part 8. The Flamingo
Time for a Make Over
?

The Flamingo Hotel's coffee shop has been on my to-do list for this series for a while. "Old school," "Like the old Vegas coffee shops, and things like this is what I've been hearing about this restaurant that I haven't stepped foot into for many years. My sister must go there when she's in town, and she gives it mad ups. Most of the reviews online give it a decent shake, too.

Read on for review.

The coffee shop is called "The Tropical Breeze," but the smell of 'old dank restaurant' that hung in the air, one with which I'm certain you're familiar, made the breeze far from tropical. That same smell comes from a lot of old hotel restaurants. I guess it's inevitable. The coffee shop was empty and a skeleton crew was working, which must be the reason I had my request for a counter seat denied. "I'll just take you to a table," was the answer I got.

The Tropical Breeze has a late-night menu, which is to say they offer a smaller selection than they do during the rest of the day. The selections were limited. Nothing out of the ordinary here, just the run of the mill breakfasts and a few non-breakfast items to fill up the space on the flip side of the menu.

I ended up ordering a breakfast burrito, and coffee. While I was waiting for the food, this guy at the booth next to mine asked me, "How'd ya do tonight?" It took me a second to realize what he meant and I tardily replied "I don't really gamble that much." He gave me a puzzled look and said, "What, are you here with a convention or something?"
"Nah, I live here," I said.
"Oh," he said as he looked back down at his coffee. He said not one word to me after that. That was all good, because I really wasn't into chit-chatting, but it made me wonder if he stopped talking to me if I live here, or if I don't gamble. Usually, the types who just start talking to you like that are trying to talk as long as you let them. Strange. Maybe he was just interested in my luck. ? ?

The burrito arrived piping hot and it tasted pretty good. Eggs cheese and sausage. The sausage was cut up pieces of link sausage. I found that odd not only because it seemed like a 'home' move, but also because it's described as a 'steak' burrito on the menu. No biggie, like I said, it was pretty good. Although, I wonder what the deal is there.? The potatoes were good, too. They were cut in a large dice and seasoned well. I lingered and did some work on my lap for a bit, and stared at the keno board looking for my numbers, but they never came up. Hah! Just kidding, I don't have a personal set of numbers.
Pretty mediocre is where I stand in regards to The Tropical Breeze at The Flamingo. I wouldn't steer somebody away from the place, but I didn't get the experience I had anticipated. I know it's a roll of the dice when you're eating on the graveyard shift, but that's a sucky status quo. We accept a lot of bullshit like that though, don't you think?

After breakfast I walked around the pool area where they keep the live flamingos. It's nice out there. Waterfalls and all kinds of greenery around a scenic landscape. It was nice walking around there taking pictures. Check out the shots I got. lvfrankgv ONE LOVE > OUR LOVE
